Atlanta began as the site for the southern terminus of Western & Atlantic Railroad in 1837.  In 1845, the town’s charter was amended to Atlanta, a feminized version of Atlantic derived from the original railroads name.

Chattanooga was originally inhabited by the Cherokee American Native tribe.  In 1838, the city took the name Chattanooga, which means “rock rising to a point.”  Today, Chattanooga, is the 4th largest city in the state.
